We have some tips for you designed to facilitate your move and make it as smooth as possible. So here are some tips on how to pack your possessions in the best possible way.
Moving boxes
If you use your own boxes or cartons other than boxes designed for moving, then they should have handles. They should also be secured with twine or strong string before transport. Remember that you can borrow our moving boxes against a deposit, when booking your move. They are practical and sturdy and only need to be folded together when full.
The individual weight of each box should not exceed 30kg and they should be well filled, heavier items at the bottom and lighter items at the top. Stack them in threes and mark both sides of the box (not the top) to indicate where the items originated from, bedroom, bathroom etc.
Books
Never fill a box completely with books, leave half the space for lighter items such as cushions, clothes etc.
Glass and chinaware
Glass and chinaware demand extra special attention. Wrap the chinaware well in paper and place them on top of each other. Fill all the empty space in the box with crumpled paper. Glass should be wrapped in tissue wrapping and placed flat in the box. Remember if you use a removal company you should let them pack your more fragile possessions as they are then responsible for any breakages.
Electrical items and flexing
Remember that certain electrical items require disconnection by an electrician or plumber. Washing machines also require special transport measures. All leads and flexes to televisions, video players, stereo equipment should be disconnected, rolled up and taped or tied with string.
Other advice
• Mirrors, paintings and chandeliers should be left hanging as normal.
• All light bulbs should be removed.
• All loose fitting shelves should be removed, stacked and tied with twine or taped.
• Bundle skis, curtain rails, brooms and similar items into easily carried packages.
• Roll up all carpets and mats and tie them securely.
• Smaller paintings should be put in open boxes, leave the larger ones hanging on the wall.* Flowers and small potted plants should be placed in open boxes.
• Drawers in dressers and similar items of furniture should be emptied. Smaller dressers or similar containing non fragile items do not need to be emptied.
